Betty Pruitt was born August 9, 1959 in Ralph, Alabama to James and Ruby Sealey. She is the fourth of ten children. She was saved, baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost at a very early age under Elder James Henderson, during a summer revival at Washington Temple Church of God in Christ. Godly principles were instilled in her by her parents and she credits much of her church training to the late Mother Luella Washington. She was a woman of prayer and one who dedicated many hours working with the youth of the church. As a youth growing up at Washington Temple, Betty worked closely with Youth Church on Friday nights. She also served as director of Vacation Bible School, choir member, Sunday School teacher, and any areas of the church that needed assistance.
Betty graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School in 1977. She pursued and received a degree in Stenography from C.A. Fredd State Technical College and later began her career with the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education. She was employed with the system for twenty years, advancing in positions from Clerical Aide to School Secretary/Bookkeeper. She continued her tenure with the State of Alabama after becoming employed by Shelton State Community College in 2002. She served Shelton State Community College for fifteen years, advancing in positions from Admissions Clerk, Secretary/Receptionist, to Administrative Assistant to the President. After thirty plus years with the State of Alabama, she retired October 1, 2017. What a journey it has been and to God be the glory for the things he has done.
On June 12, 1982, she married the love of her life, Pastor Avery Pruitt. They have been married for thirty-eight years and have three beautiful daughters; Tabitha, Tiffany, and Adrian; two son-in laws; Tony and Justin; six grandchildren; Addison, Serenity, Logan, Gina, Avery James and Braxton.
She attends New Bethel Church of God In Christ in Jasper, Alabama where she serves as President of the Women’s Department and Assistant Sunday School Teacher. In September of 2013, she orchestrated a Prayer Chain Ministry and a Community Senior Citizens Thanksgiving Dinner through her local church. Her husband is the pastor and she considers it an honor to serve with him in the ministry. She also serves on the C.F. Smith District as President of the Ministers Wives Guild.
During the Spring Workers Meeting, in March of 2009, Bishop O.L. Meadows appointed her as Jurisdictional Chairlady of the Y.P.W.W. Department, replacing Mother Delores Pendleton. She served faithfully with Elder Larry Hutcherson until his resignation. Elder Avery Pruitt was appointed President of the Y.P.W.W. Department upon his resignation. She continues to serve the Youth Department with her husband.
